Do the lyrics that shape our worship services genuinely reflect the centrality of God’s Word? Or have we, bit by bit, shifted the focus of adoration from God to the "self"?
Christian music plays a powerful role within the Church—and for that very reason, it deserves closer scrutiny. Throughout history, great figures of the faith shared this concern. Huldrych Zwingli, a leader of the Swiss Reformation, viewed the almost "seductive" power of music with caution. John Calvin, in turn, sought to reform how we sang, reclaiming the practices of the Early Church.
It was against this backdrop that this book was born: a quest to understand musical worship from a biblical perspective. By comparing the Old Testament with the worship of the Early Church, and looking through the lens of Protestant Reformational ideals, we analyze not only the theory—but the practice.
The data may surprise you: in a study comparing the lyrics of one hundred Brazilian Christian songs with the one hundred and fifty Psalms, a pattern emerged. A vast majority of contemporary songs revolve around the individual—their pain, their dreams, and their victories. The problem? A certain tone of hedonism and egocentrism has infiltrated our playlists, often without us even noticing.
